What causes it
Knee pain has many possible causes, and the right plan depends on finding which applies to you.
- Patellofemoral pain, often called runner's knee
- Patellar tendon pain from jumping or running
- Ligament sprains, including ACL and MCL injuries
- Meniscus irritation or tears
- Knee osteoarthritis
- Weakness or reduced control at the hip and ankle
Common symptoms
Symptoms depend on the cause.
- Pain around or behind the kneecap
- Pain on stairs, squatting or after sitting
- Swelling or a feeling of the knee giving way
- Clicking, catching or locking
- Stiffness in the morning
How we assess it
Your first appointment is a full physiotherapy assessment in our Umm Suqeim clinic. We take a detailed history, examine posture and movement, test strength, flexibility and joint mobility, and carry out specific clinical tests. We also screen for signs that need a doctor's review or imaging. You leave with a clear explanation and a personalised plan. For the knee, we also look at how your hips, ankles and feet move during squats, steps and hops.
How we treat it
Most knee plans centre on progressive strengthening, guided by sports injury rehabilitation principles, so the knee can tolerate load again. Manual therapy can ease stiffness and pain, and Electrons Plus PEMF can be directed over the painful area. We also review your training load, footwear and running technique.
Treatments we use
- Sports Injury Rehabilitation for knee painStructured, milestone-based rehab designed to get you back to training with confidence.

When to seek help
Book an assessment if knee pain lasts more than a week or two or affects your training. Seek urgent medical care if the knee swells rapidly after an injury, you cannot bear weight, the knee locks and will not straighten, or it becomes hot and red with fever.
Frequently asked questions
Should I stop running with knee pain?
Not always. We often reduce and modify your running rather than stop it entirely.
Do I need an MRI for knee pain?
Many knee problems can be diagnosed clinically. We will refer you for imaging if your assessment suggests it is needed.
Can physiotherapy help knee arthritis?
Exercise-based physiotherapy is commonly recommended for knee osteoarthritis to help manage pain and improve function.
How long does knee rehab take?
It depends on the cause. Minor problems can improve within weeks, while ligament injuries can need several months.
Do you treat knee pain after ACL surgery?
Yes. See our post-surgery rehabilitation page for details of our ACL rehab approach.
