What is it?
Manual therapy describes skilled, hands-on techniques applied to joints, muscles and connective tissue. It includes joint mobilisation, where a joint is moved gently and rhythmically to improve range, soft tissue release, myofascial techniques, assisted stretching and therapeutic massage.
These techniques are commonly used to calm sensitive tissues, reduce muscle guarding and create a window in which movement and exercise feel easier. Used together with a home exercise programme, they can help you get more from each session.
Who it can help
Manual therapy is one of the most widely used physiotherapy treatments and is commonly used for:
- Neck and shoulder pain, including desk-related stiffness
- Lower back pain and sciatica-type symptoms
- Frozen shoulder and reduced shoulder range
- Tennis elbow and forearm overload
- Hip and knee stiffness
- Post-training tightness and general recovery
What happens in a session
Each session begins with a check-in on how you have been and a short re-assessment of movement. Your clinician then applies the techniques best suited to your findings, which may be firm or gentle depending on your comfort and the tissue involved.
Most sessions finish with exercises or stretches to continue at home, so the gains you make on the treatment table carry over into daily life.
How many sessions you may need
Acute stiffness may respond within a few sessions, while longer-standing problems often benefit from a short course combined with progressive exercise. We agree a plan with you after your assessment and adjust it based on your progress.

Frequently asked questions
Is manual therapy the same as a massage?
Massage is one form of manual therapy. Manual therapy also includes joint mobilisation, stretching and specific soft tissue techniques chosen after an assessment.
Will it be painful?
Some techniques can feel firm, but treatment should stay within your comfort. Tell your clinician at any time and they will adjust.
How long is a session?
Most sessions last between 45 and 60 minutes, including re-assessment and exercise advice.
Do I need to do exercises as well?
Usually, yes. Exercises help maintain the movement gained during treatment and address the underlying cause of the problem.
Can manual therapy help after sport?
Yes. It is commonly used for recovery after training or competition, alongside mobility and strength work.
